From Film to Digital

UPDATE: This copy copied from Blogger to WordPress December 5, 2005.

In my younger days I loved to take photos - lots of them.

Not sure when I stopped - maybe the day I sold my Minox camera. I just loved that thing - small enough to fit in my pocket … but unfortunately not that simple to focus properly

This spring I sold my old Nikon FA. Together with some lenses, a good flash, my vife’s Pentax K1000 and some more lenses we actually got NEARLY enough to buy Canon S70 digital camera. I thank Kerrissdale Cameras for this opportunity. London Drugs in Richmond’s offer was $30!

It’s mostly my wife using the camera. We like it, although flash photography has its limits - that the camera often shuts down when we touch the sliding front cover is also kind of annoying. We should take it in for a check-up I guess.

We’ll soon reach 5,000 digital photos - mostly of our kids. We used to take quite a bit of 35mm film. I’m thinking London Drugs might even miss us - a week of holiday photos often produced 2-3 rolls … per day!

My interest in photography is coming back. Maybe because now I can play with photos without any large film and development cost? My 7-year old daughter has her own digital camera as well. No zoom, just point-and-shoot. I tell you, buying digital has been a money saver.

For the time being my 4-year old son is happy using the cameras supplied in cereal boxes this summer. Of course, one day he will realize we did not put any film in his camera.

I bought a new printer to be able to print SOME photos at home. Looks like I need a new harddrive as well. Maybe even upgrade my P3-800. And then I’d like to invest in a D-SLR. Maybe I’m not saving so much after all - but at least my interest in photography is back!

Turns out my LinkedIn contact list has a couple of photographers on it as well - Kris Krug and Victor Aberdeen - they’re great photographers - and blogging enthusiasts as well.

It was actually Paul Kedrosky’s blog that had a link to Kris’ Flikr profile that made me think about photography. Why did I read Paul’s blog? I was just following up on the presenters at VEF’s Web 2.0 presentation earlier ths week. I loved Dick Hardt’s Identity 2.0 presentation! More on that later.
