Whales beached in Tasmania
How sad …
130 whales died after beaching themselves in Tasmania.
Some people speculate it happened because of Navy activities, other researchers say we may never know the reason why.
In any case, it’s sad.
This year I had the opportunity to go whale watching - first with Jamie’s Whaling Station in Tofino, later from the Lower Mainland. What an experience.
[Pause - Disclosure: I admit I might be biased as I actually worked as the General Manager for the company in the Lower Mainland. We parted ways in August [2005].]
Anyway, whale watching is indeed a special experience when you see these magnificent animals. I brought my 4 year old along here locally and we saw about 20 killer whales.
Back to the beaching … 130 whales - that is more whales than we normally see locally. The 3 local pods (family groups) consist of (Summer 2005 data) 95 animals. For regular updates on BC killer whales, check out the BE WHALE WISE blog.
If you are interested in going whale watching from the Lower Mainland, then check out one of the operators in Steveston, BC - Vancouver Whale Watch or Steveston Seabreeze. Feel free to say ROAR sent you
[More Disclosure: I will not make any money on you mentioning my name, but maybe one of the companies will take me and my daughter out (she did not get to go while I was in the industry)]
Watching whales can be very interesting … loosing them to beaching is really sad!
