abovo foto - Jackson scare

Filed under: thoughts, photography, personal, Internet — roar @ 10:49 pm

I was in the process of telling a friend why I though he might benefit from joining my LinkedIn network.

He runs a wedding photography business on the side of his day job, and I used the example that my contacts might be searching for a photographer.

That made me think that I already have two photographers in my LinkedIn contacts, and I decided to pass these web site addresses on to my friend.

I sent him to Kris Krug and Victor Aberdeen’s sites.

To make sure I had Victor’s URL right I went to his site.

Both Kris and Victor knows my friend Ean Jackson. And I guess this is what made my heart beat faster when I opened Victor’s site.

Victor shows some of his most recent photos on his home page. When I opened it up I saw a photo with the caption “Jackson”. In it you see 2 search and rescue technicians doing their work.

Ean is an ultra-runner, and you never know what he might be up to. A while back he ran for 43 HOURS and 50 minutes, completing the 180 km long Sunshine Coast Trail NON-STOP!

So, it would not surprise me if Ean needed some Search and rescue help somewhere.

Jackson turned out to be a dog. A black lab that had just fallen off a 50 ft cliff.

I’m glad it wasn’t Ean, and happy they rescued the dog as well.

Have you donated to your local Search and rescue group lately?

Blogger - Watch Out

Filed under: thoughts, business, marketing, software, Internet, blogging — roar @ 12:43 am

The other night I was making a new entry into by blog when I realized something kind of funny.

The spell check tool for “Blog This!” (Google Bar) does not recognize the words “blog” and “Blogger”!

Dick Hardt - Blame Canada - Harvard Math

Filed under: thoughts — roar @ 12:25 am

Note: Updated from Blogger December 5, 2005

Dick Hardt has shown us a great example of Harvard math.

The conclusion, based on formulas sent to Dick by a friend, is that women = problems.

Here is my comment to that blog entry:

In this case I’m not sure we fully understood Dick’s actual problem - his initial focus was on recent developments in his romantic life.

If we say Romance (R) is the product of Woman (W) * Time (T) * Money (M) *, then

we have R = T * M * W

Clearly, if any of T, M or W is missing or is very small, then R will not be much to talk about either.

Einstein’s famous formula E = mc2 has showed that the energy of a system depends of how much ( m - mass) you put into it. Luckily for us with little time and little money, c2 is a very large constant and thus even putting a bit into a system should create a larger amount of energy.

In mathematical terms, if we say that even a little bit of time and money creates a fair bit of energy and that a measurement of romance is the energy created in the system, then we have E = T*M*W. Thus, in a case where T and/or M are small, I’m left to conclude that R (=E=T*M*W) really depends on the W (woman) and that time and money really have little to do with it.

Of course, there might be an error in my formula that requires further research by this forum. For example, it is interesting to note that even in cases where the
W(oman) is not really into the relationship, that T and M can still create R(omance) - as long as W is present and not negative.

Whales beached in Tasmania

Filed under: thoughts — roar @ 12:04 am

How sad …

130 whales died after beaching themselves in Tasmania.

Some people speculate it happened because of Navy activities, other researchers say we may never know the reason why.

In any case, it’s sad.

This year I had the opportunity to go whale watching - first with Jamie’s Whaling Station in Tofino, later from the Lower Mainland. What an experience.

[Pause - Disclosure: I admit I might be biased as I actually worked as the General Manager for the company in the Lower Mainland. We parted ways in August [2005].]

Anyway, whale watching is indeed a special experience when you see these magnificent animals. I brought my 4 year old along here locally and we saw about 20 killer whales.

Back to the beaching … 130 whales - that is more whales than we normally see locally. The 3 local pods (family groups) consist of (Summer 2005 data) 95 animals. For regular updates on BC killer whales, check out the BE WHALE WISE blog.

If you are interested in going whale watching from the Lower Mainland, then check out one of the operators in Steveston, BC - Vancouver Whale Watch or Steveston Seabreeze. Feel free to say ROAR sent you :-)
[More Disclosure: I will not make any money on you mentioning my name, but maybe one of the companies will take me and my daughter out (she did not get to go while I was in the industry)]

Watching whales can be very interesting … loosing them to beaching is really sad!

Great news!

The Anti-Spyware Coalition has released the first draft of the consensus Risk Model Description. The document is open for public comment until November 27, 2005.

Great news IF we actually end up with products that help reduce maliciuos, uwanted software on our computers.

From Film to Digital

Filed under: thoughts, Internet 2.0, photography — roar @ 11:52 pm

UPDATE: This copy copied from Blogger to WordPress December 5, 2005.

In my younger days I loved to take photos - lots of them.

Not sure when I stopped - maybe the day I sold my Minox camera. I just loved that thing - small enough to fit in my pocket … but unfortunately not that simple to focus properly

This spring I sold my old Nikon FA. Together with some lenses, a good flash, my vife’s Pentax K1000 and some more lenses we actually got NEARLY enough to buy Canon S70 digital camera. I thank Kerrissdale Cameras for this opportunity. London Drugs in Richmond’s offer was $30!

It’s mostly my wife using the camera. We like it, although flash photography has its limits - that the camera often shuts down when we touch the sliding front cover is also kind of annoying. We should take it in for a check-up I guess.

We’ll soon reach 5,000 digital photos - mostly of our kids. We used to take quite a bit of 35mm film. I’m thinking London Drugs might even miss us - a week of holiday photos often produced 2-3 rolls … per day!

My interest in photography is coming back. Maybe because now I can play with photos without any large film and development cost? My 7-year old daughter has her own digital camera as well. No zoom, just point-and-shoot. I tell you, buying digital has been a money saver.

For the time being my 4-year old son is happy using the cameras supplied in cereal boxes this summer. Of course, one day he will realize we did not put any film in his camera.

I bought a new printer to be able to print SOME photos at home. Looks like I need a new harddrive as well. Maybe even upgrade my P3-800. And then I’d like to invest in a D-SLR. Maybe I’m not saving so much after all - but at least my interest in photography is back!

Turns out my LinkedIn contact list has a couple of photographers on it as well - Kris Krug and Victor Aberdeen - they’re great photographers - and blogging enthusiasts as well.

It was actually Paul Kedrosky’s blog that had a link to Kris’ Flikr profile that made me think about photography. Why did I read Paul’s blog? I was just following up on the presenters at VEF’s Web 2.0 presentation earlier ths week. I loved Dick Hardt’s Identity 2.0 presentation! More on that later.
